■Fukugi Tree Road in Bise Village

備瀬のフクギ The streets in Bise village, near Ocean Expo Park, are designed in a checkerboard pattern and about 250 houses in this area are mostly surrounded by a luxurious forest of Fukugi trees. The landscape seen in this area is specific to Okinawa, where typhoons often hit. Fukugi trees have been used as a windbreak to protect houses from strong wind since the olden days, so many Fukugi trees were planted in the village especially around houses near the ocean. It is said that, among several thousand Fukugi trees in the village, the oldest ones are estimated to be 300 years old. When you take a stroll down a path in the sunlight shining through the leaves of the trees, you will feel at ease.

■Cape Manzamo

万座毛 Cape Manzamo is one of the top scenic tourist spots, which is famous for the elephant shaped rock formation. The cape is located northwest of Onna village office and the cliff is made from the elevated coral reef which is covered by turf. When you stand on the edge of the cape, you will see the cobalt blue sea which spreads out and the waves crushing on the rock under your gaze. Also, to the north over Nago Bay, you will see a mountain range on the northern part of the island and a mountain locally known as “Tacchu” on Ie island. And in the eastern direction, there is a magnificent view of Mount Onnadake, a symbol of Onna village. It is said that Manzamo (it means10,000 people sit on the field in kanji characters) was named after the time when King Sho Kei visited Manzamo in 1726 and praised the place by saying “The top of the cliff is big enough for 10,000 people to sit.”
